News coverage

The Glenister study receives information from many channels - contacts from the internet, letters, phone calls, newspapers.

As I piece the information together, I build a better picture of the family - past and present.

This section gives an indication of the information that arrives, and some of the things I do with it.

News display and selection
News is shown monthly, with an entry for each day that something happened on the study.

You can work through the news month by month, or go directly to the index to select by date, content, or root.

Names of people in the summary link directly to their entry in their family tree. The root entry links to the top of the family tree which is referenced.

Newsletters
The Glenister Information Newsletters (GINs) published on paper in the 1990s are available here.

20040627An email from Richard Ayres, of Newcastle-under-Lyme, Staffordshire looking for the present day location of Old Field Farm, Beaconsfield the residence of John Glenister in 1861. I pointed Richard to www.old-maps.co.uk which is a free source of old maps of England, fully indexed, with a place name finder, a link to modern mapping and aerial photographs.004031
First email from Deirdre Glenister Frye of Howard, Ohio, USA with an update on her family tree. 005186
25First email from Claire Glenister Powell of Gaithersburg, Maryland, USA with an update on her family tree.000470
Bronwen Thomas of Croydon South, Victoria, Australia tells me she has compled arrangements for publication of her long awaited book on the history of the Glenister family in Australia and its links worldwide. Click here for more details of what the book covers and how to order.
23I tidied the register of site users and removed a number of inactive entries. The process now runs automatically and removes users who who don't visit the site for more than six months. To help users to stay registered, the process sends out two warning messages by email a month apart, before the final removal. If you're affected by this, you can simply re-register later – but it helps to stay registered.
19Email from Ken Glenister of Redhill, Surrey with corrections to parts of his family tree – and the promise of more to come.
More information from Francis Glenister of St Albans, Hertfordshire enabled me to complete another batch of updates based on the index of births, marriages and deaths held at the General Register Office. Seventeen family trees were updated and a lot of entries removed from the dataheap
18An email from Sue Whitton (born Glenister) of Great Yarmouth, Norfolk with details of her birth which I'd accidentally omitted from the family tree. Sue is the daughter of Richard Henry Glenister (1908-1975) and Eileen Muriel Volck (1910-1976) 000943
11First email from Earl Glanister Gaden of Tioga, New York, USA who’s been trying to research his family tree for over 30 years. According to Earl’s mother Thelma Elizabeth Glanister (1906-1987) they are descended from two brothers James Glanister and Edward Glanister who came over from Europe. At present, we can’t confirm a link to any known family, but we’re still looking!
09Francis Glenister of St Albans, Hertfordshire with an extract from the newspaper Bucks Free Press which has an article about a BMW car bodyshop business opened by three people including Rene Glenister who was at that time unknown to us. With a couple of phone calls Francis established that Rene is a relative - he is the son of James Douglas Glenister (1918-) and his second wife who he married in Belgium. We hope to add more details to this branch of the family tree later.005327
05Francis Glenister of St Albans, Hertfordshire has acquired to domain names www.glennister.org and www.mcglenister.org and has linked them to this web site. Thanks Francis.
02I received from Clif Knight of Plumstead, Kent a copy of all the Glenister entries in the 2002 electoral register. This will help to complete the picture of where Glenisters are across England today, and to identify any missing links.
01An email from Kay Cullen of Amersham, Buckinghamshire with a useful source of information for details of Glenisters emigrating from the UK to Australia. The site at www.prov.vic.gov.au/access/online.htm has a number of Glenister entries for me to check out!
I completed a major update of the main Glinister family tree with a huge bunch of information supplied by Francis Glenister of St Albans, Hertfordshire. 000597
NEO - The Time Saving Email Organizer for MS Outlook For about 6 months I've been using a software package called Nelson Email Organiser (NEO) to keep control of the many, many emails I receive in connection with the Glenister family history. I'm so impressed with NEO that I've decided to promote it through the site.

I use Outlook as the basic email program, but with NEO alongside it really helps me to manage email in a much more sensible way. There are some great improvements: I no longer rely on Outlook folders to store email (I used to forget which folder I'd stored it in), I can keep track of people when the change their email address (NEO brings all their mail together in a correspondent view), and I can search my all my email archives in a fraction of the time it takes with Outlook.

The NEO basic version costs US $39.95 and is suitable for most users, although I use the NEO Pro version at US $69.95 because I have a more complex set up with multiple email stores. Click on the banner to take a look, download the free trial version, then run it for a couple of weeks to see how it can improve your email.
