News coverage

The Glenister study receives information from many channels - contacts from the internet, letters, phone calls, newspapers.

As I piece the information together, I build a better picture of the family - past and present.

This section gives an indication of the information that arrives, and some of the things I do with it.

News display and selection
News is shown monthly, with an entry for each day that something happened on the study.

You can work through the news month by month, or go directly to the index to select by date, content, or root.

Names of people in the summary link directly to their entry in their family tree. The root entry links to the top of the family tree which is referenced.

Newsletters
The Glenister Information Newsletters (GINs) published on paper in the 1990s are available here.

20040826ColaIt is with great sadness I report that Cola, our beloved cat, died yesterday at the age of 18. In June 2003 Cola became ill and was diagnosed as having a nasal tumour which could not be surgically removed, and was expected to survive for only 3 to 6 months. It is a testimony to her fighting spirit and the skill of our local veterinary doctor that she actually survived 14 months and one day. Although very active throughout her illness, she became very frail this week, and passed away peacefully in her sleep as we stroked her.

Cola was much more than just a pet to us - she was part of our family, and she gave us unqualified love, affection and companionship. She was very much loved, and is very much missed.

18I received an email from Gwen Ing of Chesham, Buckinghamshire with news of the death of her father, Edward Pearce, last December at the age of 92.001984
I identified updated the Glenister War Dead page to show the family tree which each person belongs to.
I identified another two previously unlinked entries in the Glenister War Dead working with information from the Commonwealth War Graves Commission web site. The first was Joseph Glenister (1892-1917), the son of George Glenister and Ellen Hurley. Joseph served in the Kings Royal Rifle Corps and fought at Ypres, Belgium, where he died. The second was Australian John Putman Baker Glenister (1894-1917), the son of John Putman Glenister and Emily Dick. John served in the Australian Infantry and also fought at Ypres, Belgium, where he too died.002548

16First email from Geoff Glenister of Novato, California, USA just to say hello.002548
12I received an email from Julie Glenister of Reading, Berkshire with the sad news of the death of her husband Mark Glenister in May this year at the age of only 37. I offer my condolences to Julie and the rest of the family in their sorrow.000470
10I found the origin in England of a branch of the Glanister family which spread to the US. The children of James Glanister (1790-1877) are known to be James (1828-) and Jemima (1836-) who both married in England in the 1850s then moved to the US soon afterwards.

James junior spread the Glanister line which continues today, while his son-in-law Edward Peto enlisted in the army, fought in the US civil war and died at the battle of Gettysburg. I hope to find out more about this family later.

I made the family connection of another Glenister who died in the first world war. This was Alfred Henry Glenister (1898-1919) of Amersham, Buckinghamshire. Alfred is listed among the Glenister War Dead. 000548
08I recevied an email from Earl Glanister Gaden of Spencer, New York, USA with an extract of the US federal census from 1860 for Cayuga, New York which gives a clue as to the origin of this branch of the Glanister family in England around the year 1829. I hope to follow up on a GRO index entry which may give more information. 010372
